Interests & Objectives of the Great Pond Foundation
Our Interests
Below is a summary of some of the projects and studies in which we have had a hand in advancing or are considering involvement. Printed reports are available for many of these works.
PROJECTS:
o Restoration of the Mattakesett Herring Creek
o Exploring de-nitrification of the Pond
o Dredging the delta adjacent to Pond's opening
o Restoration of oyster habitat
STUDIES:
o Annual monitoring of the Pond's water quality
o Nitrogen plume evaluation
o Finfish study
o Study of disease resistance to "dermo" disease by triploid oysters

Objectives
o To protect and enhance the Pond's water quality.
o To protect and enhance the Pond's natural biodiversity.
o To regulate the Pond's water level, avoiding the drastic highs and lows that occur before and after openings to the sea.
o To preserve the physical and visual integrity of Pond's shoreline.
o To enhance wild fisheries and shell-fisheries as well as selected managed fisheries such as the oyster.
o To promote research and education to clarify the Pond's unique ecological organization and interrelationships, including the impacts of human activities.
o To protect the Pond's historically quiet and rural character.
